EOS Part V: Emotional Effects of Aromas

Updated: May 9, 2019

When we smell an essential oil we sometimes notice a shift in mood. Essential oils also play a role in the emotional realm as well as physical. This process is not magical, but purely biological. In this post we look into how essential oils work at a cellular level so we can understand how it effects our overall emotional wellbeing.

First lets see what a scent looks like at a molecular level and then travel with it on its journey into the nose.

Aroma Molecule
Maltol, one of the molecules known for the smell of fresh baked bread.

To the right is a molecule known as Maltol. Scent molecules are made of a variety of atoms, there are thousands that make up the different aromas in the world. These scent molecules are released into the air by different sources (flowers, food, burning, etc.). As the molecules propel in the air, some find a way into your nasal cavity. At the very top of the naval cavity we all have specialized nerve cells called olfactory receptors. Scent molecules attach themselves with a lock and key method to these receptors. Once a successful connection or smell has been made the nerve cells start sending messages to the amygdala through the olfactory bulb.

The amygdala is where the messages from the scent molecule is received from the olfactory receptors and processed. This then triggers an emotional response and sometimes even memories. These emotions and memories are then processed by another part of the brain, the hypothalamus, which fully processes the messages and will release a variety of messenger molecules called ligands. Ligands can communicate with other cells in the body and effect cellular function. It is this specific pathway that shows the direct physical connection between scents, brain, body, and how the therapeutic benefits of essential oils work on a physical and emotional level.
