In this article we will be going over different ways to use essential oils in our lives. Then we will go over the complex category of carrier oils. If you are still unsure of what exactly essential oils are, then take a look at part one of this series, where we go over what and where essential oils come from. If you've been there and done that then read on.
There are several ways to take essential oils. All of them can fall under three categories: Aromatically, Topically, and Internal. Below we are going to go over each category as well as share some expert tips.
AROMATIC
This is probably the most popular way of using essential oils. Any method that allows the oils to be inhaled by us is considered aromatic. Diffusing is the most effective way to change the atmosphere and feeling of a living space. To the right is a reed diffuser, here the oils can climb up the inside of the reed and slowly be released into the air. It works best in smaller rooms with low air draft. There are also candle diffusers which have a small plate or area above a candle. The heat from the candle allows the oil to evaporate into the air. Although it does spread into the room nicely not all oils react to the heat the same. For example essential oils that are derived from a resin will leave a sticky hard to clean spot.
A tried and true way to enjoy essential oils throughout your household is using a air diffuser. First choose an oil of your choice and add 3 - 5 drops into a diffuser filled with water. Don't overfill or your diffuser or it won't work properly. These devices use an atomizer which can break up water molecules and diffuse them as a mist into the air. This mist can carry the oil that you chose and spread it across the room delicately. All essential oils work well with water diffusers, just be sure to clean it after each use and run a water / vinegar solution once and awhile to help clean out all the crevices.
INTERNAL
Many of the essential oils come from plants or herbs that we can readily eat. Because of that you can substitute essential oils in cooking recipes as they are listed. But be careful as the essential oils are very concentrated forms of the herb or plant. Use one drop first, taste, and repeat until you receive desired flavor. Combine your essential oils with olive oil to make your own infused olive oil. One drop goes a long way try some Basil or Rosemary with Olive Oil. After a day or two the flavor should be completely infused and ready for cooking. You can also take them in a vegetable capsule, it is one of our favorite ways to reap the benefits of essential oils. To do this mix it with a edible carrier oil like olive or canola oil. Fill the capsule with your essential oil first and then fill the rest with your choice of carrier.
Feeling like a hangover disaster? Lemon and Grapefruit with a carrier will do the trick, drink with 8 ounces coconut water and you're back to normal. Stomachaches or bloating? A capsule with peppermint and fennel with soothe your troubles! However, you may not have the time or space to make a capsule, if thats the case then it is also safe to take a few drops under the tongue. Always look research the oil first before you ingest it. There are is a list of oils that should not be taken internally or some in small amounts. Also allow your body do digest each dose you take internally. Essential oils are highly concentrated and you still work in small amounts.
TOPICAL
Some oils, like peppermint and lavender, can be applied directly to skin. But your oils can last longer and are safer if they are mixed with a carrier oil. This may be the first time hearing of a carrier oil. So before we move on heres a quick definition
" Carrier Oils are base vegetable oils that are used to dilute essential oils or absolutes. They received the name carrier because they are able to "carry" the essential oils deeper into the skin and into the bloodstream. "
Using carrier oils is not only important but also more effective and cost conscious. Carrier oils tend to be less expensive so you can get a larger amount and infuse it with an essential oil. This way you use less essential oil but it will last much longer and you get the same benefits! These oils are a category in themselves as they have an array of moisturizing and enriching properties. We will go into more detail on carrier oils later on in the series. If you don't want to use a carrier oil its no problem. Sometimes the situation calls for some quick drop application. Just make sure its safe to apply that oil your using directly on skin, sometimes called NEAT application. If the oil causes irritation then you most likely need to dilute with a carrier.
Here are some of our tips for applying oils topically!
1. If you didn't infuse your carrier oil with any essential oils you can still Layer with a carrier oil afterwards! First apply the essential oil of your choice NEAT onto skin, then use a carrier oil of your choice and massage into area until it is mostly absorbed. Use a small amount first and add more if needed!
2. Warming your hands with a carrier oil first before massage or apply essential oils is a great way to facilitate the absorption process and increase circulation in the area.
3. Research reflex points or reflexology. Determine which oil and point can help with your ailment and massage the oil into that reflex point.
4. Applying and massaging into feet has an overall body effect as the foot is connected to all the other organs and body systems.
5. Avoid sensitive areas like groin or eyes. You can apply around outer-parts of ears but avoid inside. Research auricular therapy for more information on the ear and its correspondences with the body.
6. Use a variety of oils and layer them to achieve great results! Check out the last section of our series Intro & Advanced Blending and Layering for more information and some examples.
